Although below the Curie temperature PZT of all compositions above 5% of lead titanate is ferroelectric, the solid solution is useful as a practical piezoelectric ceramic only over a small composition of about 48% of PbTiO3 and 52% of PbZrO3. This composition lies near the boundary of the two phases, rhombohedral (FR(HT)) and tetragonal (FT), as shown in the phase diagram. This boundary is called the morphotropic phase boundary (MPB). At this composition, PZT is poised between the two structures, rhombohedral and tetragonal, with equal probability.

Due to this symmetry, a single crystal of ZnO has a unique direction (C-axis), which is the polar direction. ZnO thin films with high C-­axis orientation exhibit good piezoelectric properties. ZnO crystals in the form of thin films or other nanostructural forms such as nanowires and nanotubes have been studied extensively for various piezoelectric applications. Some of the techniques used for the preparation of ZnO nanostructures are RF sputtering, sol–gel spin coating, chemical vapour deposition, and pulsed laser deposition [12–14].

The Curie temperature itself varies with the composition as seen in the phase diagram. The crystal structure below the Curie temperature depends on the composition of the solid solution.
