I could never forget the tears my teacher shed as he taught us to repeat the chorus over and over again.  Umma and EunYim's mother, our caretaker's wife, would spend the whole day and night preparing the picnic feast while the children would gather around them and relive the outing we had had the year before.  Of course we would all get up early, put on our traveling clothes and straw sandals, and hurry through our breakfast.  Everyone stopped, drank the clear water with cupped hands, and sat on the sunwarmed rocks to rest.

Its tragic tone had become ingrained in the voice of the Korean, and the quality of sadness could be detected in his speech and songs.  But the king in his Grand Bier was fast disappearing, leaving in its wake only the swirling dust and the faint cry of the piri.  It was dark when I arrived home. ” Umma rushed out to greet me at the gate. ” I was surprised to hear myself saying that when I hadn't eaten anything all day and I was famished.  Big Sister Alice asked me if the people at the funeral were really sad, and Sister SoonOk, the dear crippled one, asked about the royal costumes, but the rest just stared and waited for me to tell my story.

There were times when I tried to imitate this girl's bow, but I always lost my balance and fell over, sending my sisters into fits of laughter.  Now we would be treated to the New Year delicacies.  There were so many, Umma had to take some away for safekeeping.  On the way home, we would pick up all the broken glass we could find on the road.  We were now ready to do battle with any kite that dared challenge us.  Rapid pulling of the line in this position would make the kite dive straight down until the line became slack and the kite turned upward again.
